View Full Version : Worth my time?

OK, so I have written several articles for online publications and the pay is good for the work done. I really can't complain in that department.

My problem is that I am currently finishing up a book for a publisher and the pay just doesn't seem worth it! The amount to be made off of technical books just doesn't add up to the time put into them. I'll be lucky to make minumum wage off this book deal.

Would I do it again though? You better believe it. Just for the sake of putting it on my resume :).

Anyone else have any experience with any freelance writing, and was it worth the time you put into it?

I'd be interested to find out how you obtained your writing jobs for online publications. Through personal contacts ? or some other means ?

Thanks...

Basically just being around and getting yourself noticed. Be active in the community that you want to write about. Write some articles or tutorials for web sites that don't pay money for them. Then, once you have some published works on the web by way of the free writings, approach the publications and tell them you'd like to write for them. Most are looking for writers at any given time. You just need to be able to show that you can handle the job, hence the reason for having some stuff already out there....

i just wrote my frist article, for php|a, and i can comment on that.

even that wasn't worth it, if we talk just about money. i have put way more time into it than i have been payed.

and that's maybe just because i am a perfectionist. maybe i could do it with half the work, but no.

and now, when everyone who have read it, having only good comments, i am ready to do it again. and i am ready to put even more time than i have, since i have to do as good as the first time.

and like matt, as you can see, i am getting ready to do it again. it's a great thing for the CV, and also, great satisfaction when i get good comments...
