It's been some time since I've contributed something here so I figured I'd start a thread talking about how to sell yourself in letters, emails, proposals, etc.
Often times you will find yourself in a position where you have quoted a price to someone on a project and they think it's too high compared to another quote they receive. What do you do in such a case?
Obviously you can't just say "well we're better". Neither do you want to just lower the price right away. You must be able to write an effective letter/email explaining your position - why you think they should choose you over the other design firm/pro even though your price is higher and even though the firm has more clients under their belt and so on.
I think its wise for all freelancers and design pros to spend some time reading on how to get better at selling yourself. It's a big part of the freelance business.
I'm in this situation now. A client I've quoted for a project just told me he received a quote much lower than mine and gave me some details about that. I just wrote an email back to him explaining why he should still choose me over the other design firm. Maybe I'll lose this client, maybe I won't. Sometimes they might take a step back and then come back a few weeks later and want you to do the work.
I might come back and start a thread and post the emails (with names, etc blocked out of course to preserve privacy) so the less experienced freelancers can see what I'm talking about. I'm not an expert or anything, but I do have a way or writing things to get my point across in a clear manner. Hope this helps.
